BASIS In Depth

Individual ShopSafe radio systems operate in Sutton High Street, Wallington and Worcester Park and are all linked to the CCTV control room, which is situated in theLBCRP Logo local police control room at Sutton Police Station. This enables the police to utilise the CCTV in response to the members and incidents occurring ensuring the appropriate deployment of their resources. The ShopSafe radio system enables the members to exchange real time information on people, incidents and assist each other to deal with on going common problems. The relevant Police Safer Neighbourhood team are also in possession of ShopSafe radios, therefore enabling them to respond to incidents that would require police action. There is a weekly BASIS Scheme information sharing CCTV Camerameeting for the businesses in Sutton to share and exchange data on recent events and those pre-planned occasions in the immediate future. A summary report is then given to the Police for their information and any action as they deem necessary.

The data received from the individual members and stored on the HICOM computer analytical database builds to form a picture on activities, individuals and patterns of operations. This enables the issue of Exclusion Notices to certain prolific individuals who persist in plying their ‘trade’ within the business areas of the London Borough of Sutton. The issue of these notices has proved successful in improving the local environment and deterred some of our most prolific thieves from plying their style of work in the Borough. The BASIS Scheme Manager provides a written statement on behalf of the members in support of the Police when they apply for an Anti Social Behaviour Order, if the individual is known to BASIS.
